The Manta Ray is an elegant aluminium metallophone with a stainless steel frame set into a sturdy timber base. The idividual tubes are suspendid by coated stell cable. The same scale is mirrored to the right and left sides and the range is two octaves and a fifth, the scale is C major; playing this outdoor musical instrument is a delight. Metallophones have been used in music for 100s of years. There are several different types used in balinese and javanese gamelan esembles, including the gender, gangsa and saron. Metallaphones have a single row of bars, tuned to the distinctive pelong or slendro scales, or a subset of them. The western Glockenspiel and vibraphone are also metallaphones: they have two rows of bars, in an imitation of the piano keysboard, and are tuned to the chromatic scale.
The Manta Ray metallaphone has been inspected by the play inspection company who have confirmed its compliance with EN1176. Spare parts are available to order.
